In the 50's
the founder Mr. N.B. Shrestha planted the seeds of NB Group
starting the trade with Tibet. In those days, rice wheat,
spices and sugar were exported from Nepal while salt, sheep
and wool were imported from Tibet. Such kind of trade was
expanded gradually with the export of medicinal herbs and
Nepalese handicrafts to Japan and Hong Kong. Trading was further
expanded with Bangladesh with the export of railway sleepers
and red lentil seeds, between the years 1978-1983.
During the 80's NB Group was
exposed to the national arena while supplying fertilizers
to AIC through tenders. During the 80's NB Group stepped into
the representation and liasion business by representing various
foreign firms. The 80's also brought NB Group to the industrial
sector when it established saw mills, cold storage and a brick
factory.
The 90's introduced NB Group
as a prominent business house when it acquired Harisiddhi
Brick and Tiles Factory under the First phase of privatisation
program of HMG Nepal through competitive bidding. Harisiddhi
Brick & Tiles Factory belongs to the bigger scale industries
in Nepal. NB Group also entered into the textile industry
when it participated in the takeover of Balaju Textile Industry
Limited along with other promoters.
Thereafter, the Group under
its strategic Development and Investment Programme, focused
primarily on the financial sector, which in Nepal's context
has many opportunities for growth and development. The strategies
adopted by its young and energetic management foresaw the
potential in trade and commerce with the promulgation of the
open economy by HMG/Nepal.
With the emerging economies
and cohabitation of SAARC countries within the region, NB
Group had the vision to foresee the unison of all industries
culminating into the financial sector.
Armed with such foresight
and a dedicated management, the Group made their first presence
in the Financial sector with the inception of Nepal Bangladesh
Bank Ltd. the first joint venture commercial bank with neighbouring
Bangladesh in collaboration with the IFIC Bank of Bangladesh.
Continuing to make major strides in the financial sector the
Group was successful in promoting the first joint venture
Merchant Bank in Nepal, the Nepal Sri Lanka Merchant Bank
Ltd. This venture is in collaboration with the Merchant Bank
of Sri Lanka Ltd., the pioneer and the largest Merchant Bank
in Sri Lanka.
Going from strength to strength
and committed to the development of the Kingdom's economy,
the Group formed its next alliance with the 60 year old premier
national commercial bank of Sri Lanka, the Bank of Ceylon
which culminated in the incorporation of Nepal Trade &
Commerce Bank Ltd.
With investments in well diversified
industries and employing a work force of approximately 2000,
NB Group today stands as one of the foremost business houses
in Nepal. |
